Yin and YangLesson 2 of 5 · Reading · 15 min

Two halves of one whole

Yin and Yang are the complementary aspects of every phenomenon: cold and warm, dark and bright, stillness and motion. Neither is absolute; each carries the seed of the other.

Four relationships

  • Opposition: they restrict each other
  • Interdependence: neither exists without the other
  • Mutual consumption and growth: more of one is less of the other
  • Transformation: at its extreme, each turns into the other

In the body

The back is Yang, the front Yin; zang organs are Yin, fu organs Yang. Yin deficiency shows as inner heat and night sweats, Yang deficiency as cold and lethargy.
